Countries Occupied

Number of countries occupied by this species based on AntWiki Regional Taxon Lists. In general, fewer countries occupied indicates a narrower range, while more countries indicates a more widespread species.

Estimated Abundance

Relative abundance based on number of AntMaps records per species (this species within the purple bar). Fewer records (to the left) indicates a less abundant/encountered species while more records (to the right) indicates more abundant/encountered species.

Nomenclature

The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.

  • atlantis. Bothriomyrmex meridionalis r. atlantis Forel, 1894d: 14 (w.q.) ALGERIA.
    • Subspecies of meridionalis: Santschi, 1906: 365; Santschi, in Forel, 1906a: 68; Forel, 1911d: 350.
    • Status as species: Santschi, 1911f: 79; Emery, 1913a: 28; Santschi, 1919i: 210; Santschi, 1922a: 66; Cagniant, 1968a: 145; Kutter, 1968b: 205; Cagniant, 1970c: 28; Shattuck, 1994: 31; Bolton, 1995b: 81; Cagniant, 2006a: 193; Legakis, 2011: 22; Seifert, 2012b: 97 (redescription); Borowiec, L. 2014: 21 (see note in bibliography); Lebas, et al. 2016: 108.
    • Current subspecies: nominal plus perfidus.

Taxonomic Notes

Borowiec (2014) - Synonymic lists with apparently new synonyms in this publication are ignored as they are not based on objective study. Borowiec, 2014: 2, stated that, “All infraspecific names, including subspecies names, are treated as synonyms although in future studies many of them can be raised to species level.” This approach is no improvement over leaving each currently available infraspecific name as a subspecies until proved otherwise by analysis. Previously established junior synonyms remain unchanged. Also, in the Borowiec catalogue infrasubspecific (unavailable) names and nomina nuda are regarded as ‘synonyms’, but new changes of status are not indicated. (B. Bolton, pers. comm.).
