Nomenclature

The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's New General Catalogue, a catalogue of the world's ants.

  • coxalis. Formica coxalis Smith, F. 1859a: 136 (s.) INDONESIA (Aru I.). Combination in Camponotus: Roger, 1863b: 4; in C. (Tanaemyrmex): Emery, 1925b: 90. Subspecies of dorycus: Emery, 1887a: 216. Revived status as species: Emery, 1925b: 90.

The following notes on F. Smith type specimens have been provided by Barry Bolton (details):

Formica coxalis

Holotype worker (major) in Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Labelled “Aru 45.” There is also a minor worker in Oxford University Museum of Natural History, labelled “Aro 45” and with a blue Smith det. label. In the original description Smith mentions only the major worker. The minor is therefore excluded from the type-series. Note also the different spellings, Aru versus Aro.
