Description

Camponotus (Myrmoturba)latrunculus Wheeler v. victoriensis n.v. Santschi,F. (1928).

Worker major. Differs from the type by its black head with cheeks which are sometimes a little ferruginous in the case of the major workers. Two points of interest on the pronotum, the underside of the mesonotum and epinotum are ferruginous red brown, the rest of the thorax black or blackish brown (in the type the head and thorax are a brownish red).Funicles and limbs are brownish yellow. Gaster black with yellow borders. The mesoepinotal suture is less accentuated than the type. Differs from C testaceipes Sm. by its clypeus weakly keeled, with lobe more advanced where the anterior edge is rectangular with a series of points and the sides strongly indented.

Worker minor. 6 mm long. Black, the lower parts of the sides of the thorax and the terminal borders of the mandibles brownish red. Limbs brown or of a deeper red than the major worker. Funicle and tarses reddish. The head about a quarter longer than wide, the sides and posterior border convex. The eyes are near the posterior corners which are rounded. (in the case of C testaceipes the eyes are more to the front and the corners are more distinct). The frontal ridges converge at the level of the middle of the eyes. The scape surpasses the anterior border of the head by more than 1/2 its length. The clypeus is strongly keeled, more narrowly and feebly lobed in front than in the case of the major worker and without strong lateral indentation. Mandibles with 7 teeth, the first forked or very blunt or truncate. The thorax elongated. The pronotum and mesonotum forming a long and regular convexity which continues the same plane of the basal face of the epinotum (in the case of testaceipes the mesonotum distinctly projects above the profile. This passes by a curve to the short face of the declivity. The node is convex in front, nearly flat behind with the summit relatively thicker and blunter than in the case of the major worker.
