Biology

Harada (2011) - Crematogaster matsumurai was one of the most common ants sampled in an arboreal ant study in Joyama Park, Hioki City, Japan. Of the 224 trees sampled, foragers of this species were found on 65 trees and their nests in 47 trees. Formica hayashi was observed foraging with C. matsumurai on 19 trees. Thirty-three of the C. matsumurai nests were found in the most commonly sampled tree species (Prunus x yedoensis Matsumura, n=133) in this study. Camponotus vitiosus foragers were found with C. matsumurai foragers on 8 of these trees and in one case both ants had a nest in the same tree. A previous study (Harada 2005) found C. matsumurai also forager on the ground. In trees their main food sources are aphids, plant nectar, and aphid secretions.
