Summary
A typical nest of Formica pratensis. It is quite flat and consists of a low mound of grass stems and soil, surrounded by excavated sand and soil. Usually found in open areas like dry pastures. A circle of lush green vegetation around the nest indicates the fertilizing effect of ant debris. Photo taken in August 2008 in Germany, S-Hesse, near Dieburg.
