BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Karl Gößwald (January 26 1907 in Würzburg, † April 2 1996) was a German zoologist and professor. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte der Entomologe vor allem mit seinen Untersuchungen über Ameisen . Gained international recognition of the entomologist, especially with his studies on ants. Er propagierte den Einsatz von Waldameisen , um mit ihnen auf biologisch-ökologischem Wege die Widerstandskraft von Waldbiozönosen gegenüber forstschädlichen Insekten zu erhöhen. He propagated the use of wood ants (Formica rufa group) to improve the resilience of forestecosystems against pest insects by biological control. Gößwald gründete das Institut für Angewandte Zoologie der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg und gab die Fachzeitschrift Waldhygiene heraus. Gößwald founded the Institute for Applied Zoology at the Julius-Maximilians University of Wurzburg, and edited the magazine "Waldhygiene" (forest hygiene).
