- Surface of head and thorax shiny between the small punctures; color red and deep-red, some darker specimens often with faint blueish or purplish iridescence (Florida) => Leptogenys manni
- Surface of head and thorax dull, with coarse punctation; the color deep yellowish red to brownish reddish (Louisiana, Texas, northeastern Mexico) => Leptogenys elongata
