Strumigenys disjuncta group

Known from rainforest and wet forest litter samples.

Identification

Bolton (2000) - A member of the Strumigenys disjuncta-group. The only close relatives of disjuncta are Strumigenys clotho, also from Borneo, and Strumigenys agostii from Aru Island. Characters isolating agostii are discussed under that name.

Description

Worker

Holotype. TL 2.4, HL 0.62, HW 0.43, CI 69, ML 0.13, MI 21, SL 0.32, SI 74, PW 0.30, AL 0.62. Apicoscrobal hair absent. Entire head reticulate-punctate, finely on the clypeus but very coarsely and sharply on the remainder. Clypeal sculpture partially masked by the dense short spatulate hairs. From posterior margin of clypeus to occiput the dense spoon-shaped pilosity is somewhat elevated, and from the highest point of the vertex to the occipital margin the surface also bears numerous more elevated elongate hairs that are thickly remiform to spoon-shaped and curved anteriorly. Dorsum and sides of alitrunk densely and coarsely reticulate-punctate everywhere, including the propodeal declivity. Pronotal dorsum densely clothed with closely applied broadly spoon-shaped to scale-like hairs, so dense that the underlying sculpture is mostly concealed. Behind the pronotum these hairs are replaced by much sparser, shorter spatulate to spoon-shaped hairs and the surface sculpture is more clearly visible. Mesonotum also with 2-3 pairs of short and thickly remiform standing hairs that curve medially. Ventral spongiform strip on petiole vestigial beneath the peduncle, increasing in depth beneath the node but still extremely shallow. Ventral spongiform lobe of postpetiole very small but basal spongiform pad on first gastral sternite thick and conspicuous. Petiole and postpetiole dorsally thickly clothed with broad short hairs that are spatulate to spoon-shaped (appearing scale-like in dorsal view) and almost appressed. Posterior row of hairs on each waist segment scarcely extending beyond the posterior collar. With gaster in profile standing stout curved hairs are present on the basal half only. In dorsal view the gastral hairs seen to be arranged in a series of transverse rows, with fewer hairs in each succeeding row so that the area of the tergite from which hairs arise is roughly V-shaped.

Paratypes. TL 2.3- 2.4, HL 0.62-0.64, CI 68-69, ML 0.12-0.14, MI 20-23, SL 0.32-0.33, SI 74-77, PW 0.30-0.31, AL 0.60-0.64 (4 measured).

Type Material

Holotype worker, Malaysia Sabah, Umas Umas, nr Tawau, 20.vi.1968, rainforest, leafmould berlesate, acc.68.626 (R. W. Taylor) (Australian National Insect Collection).

Paratypes. 17 workers with same data as holotype. 8 workers with same data but acc.68.627 (ANIC, The Natural History Museum, Museum of Comparative Zoology).
