Afrotropical and Malagasy Monomorium species groups

AntWiki: The Ants --- Online

This page summarizes species-groups discussed in Bolton (1987) and Heterick (2006). Bolton revised the Afrotropical Monomorium while Heterick's focus was on Malagasy species.

A few notes about these species, and species-groups:

- These groupings of Monomorium species were created for convenience based on similarities in worker morphology and are not phylogenetically relevant.

- Some species treated in these two revisions, and in some cases entire species-groups, have been transferred to other genera. Molecular analyses have better resolved the relationships of some previously troublesome genera and subgenera that have at various times been treated as synonyms of Monomorium or as distinctive taxa that are similar to but stand apart from Monomorium.

- The species-groups listed below begin with a link to a page that provides more details about each group, and is followed by a list of the constituent species.

- Named species-groups from the two publications noted above that do not have their species listed are no longer relevant. Their species have been moved to other genera. Brief notes about these species-groups are given at the end of this page (other species-groups).

- Keys were included in both revisions and can be found here: Key to Afrotropical Erromyrma, Monomorium, Syllophopsis and Trichomyrmex species and here: Key to Malagasy Erromyrma, Monomorium, Syllophopsis and Trichomyrmex species

There are numerous species-groups that are no longer relevant:

  • destructor species group (Bolton 1987, Heterick 2006) - The species in this group are all members of the genus Trichomyrmex.
  • fossulatum species group (Bolton 1987) - All of the species in this group belong in the genus Syllophopsis.
  • hildebrandti species group - Proposed by Heterick (2006) as a group that, in part, subsumed Bolton's fossulatum group. All of these species are now in the genus Syllophopsis.
  • latinode species group (Bolton 1987) - What was stated to be the lone member of this group, Monomorium latinode, is now the lone representative of the genus Erromyrma - Erromyrma latinodis
  • scabriceps species group (Bolton 1987) - The species in this group, with the exception of Monomorium dentigerum, are members of the genus Trichomyrmex.
  • shuckardi species group (Heterick 2006) – The ants placed in this group are all Royidris species.
