Nomenclature

- basalis. Podomyrma basalis Smith, F. 1859a: 147 (w.) INDONESIA (Aru I.). Smith, F. 1863: 19 (q.). Senior synonym of nigra: Taylor, 1999: 173. Current subspecies: nominal plus brunnea, nigrescens, reyi, salomo, woodfordi.
- nigra. Podomyrma striata var. nigra Stitz, 1938: 102 (w.) NEW GUINEA. Junior synonym of basalis: Taylor, 1999: 173.

Podomyrma basalis
Two worker syntypes in Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Labelled “Aru,” and each with the figure “4” in the lower left corner of the stage card.
The four species described by Smith (1859a) were the first species in Podomyrma after he had defined the genus. The numbers written on the stage cards of his specimens correspond to the order of description of the four species: 1 femorata, 2 striata, 3 laevifrons, 4 basalis.
