Nomenclature

The following information is derived from Barry Bolton's Online Catalogue of the Ants of the World.

  • ithona. Polyrhachis ithonus Smith, F. 1860b: 99, pl. 1, fig. 18 (w.q.) INDONESIA (Batjan I.). Combination in P. (Myrma): Emery, 1925b: 202. Subspecies of relucens: Dalla Torre, 1893: 268; Emery, 1893e: 228; Emery, 1896d: 379; Emery, 1897d: 579; Stitz, 1911a: 375; Donisthorpe, 1932c: 460. Revived status as species: Bolton, 1974b: 177.

Type Material

Kohout (2008) - Syntype worker, queen. INDONESIA, Batjan I. (A.R. Wallace), Oxford University Museum of Natural History (examined).

The following notes on F. Smith type specimens have been provided by Barry Bolton (details):

Polyrhachis ithonus

One worker syntype and one queen syntype in Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Both labelled “Bac.” (= Batjan I.) and the queen with a Donisthorpe type-label.

Other workers of this species are present in Oxford University Museum of Natural History, from “Wag.” (= Waigeo I.) and “M.” (= Misool I.).

Determination Clarifications

Kohout (2008) - Emery (1901) listed this species from Sulawesi as Polyrhachis chaonia, however, I have only seen specimens from Morotai (= Morty), Halmahera and Ternate Islands in the Moluccas.
