AntWiki: The Ants --- Online

File Uploading

  1. Prepare the file for upload. Antwiki images can be rendered at a smaller size than the actual image.
  2. In the sidebar (on left side of any Antwiki page), under Toolbox, click "Upload file."
  3. Click “Browse” next to the “Source filename” to locate the file on your computer (the name of the “browse” button depends on your web browser).
  4. Include a "Destination filename" if the uploaded file name is not descriptive. Adding a destination filename renames the source file to whatever is typed here. Leaving this blank retains the original file name.
  5. Add information about the file in the "Summary" field. Anything added here will be included in the File Description Page.
  6. Click the “Upload file” button.

If it is a large file, you may need to wait several seconds for the upload to complete.

Naming an Uploaded File

The name of every uploaded file should provide relevant information about the file itself. A PDF of an article that can be shared on Antwiki (i.e., there must be an explicit license to share such works), for example, is best named in the form of a citation: "Author year" Be aware that the & symbol cannot be used in a filename. For an image that includes an identified ant species, include the species name as part of the title.

You can add a descriptive file title prior to uploading or change the file name as part of the uploading process. Adding a destination filename on the upload file form renames the source file to whatever is typed there. Leaving this filed blank means the file will retain its original file name.

File Description Page

Uploaded files automatically generate their own file description page. The page name takes the form: File:filename.xxx The filename is either the name of the file as uploaded from your computer or, if entered, the descriptive filename input during file uploading.

This page includes:

  1. The file, e.g., an image file is shown on the page or there is a link to the PDF file.
  2. An editable section that includes relevant information about the file (e.g., author, copyright, file description, etc).
  3. A list of Antwiki pages that link to or use the file.

The editable section can be added to during uploading or by editing the page after it has been created. Information about the file should minimally include the source of the file and its copyright status. It can also be useful to add Categories and other information. See Help:Images or Help:PDF to find out more about file description pages and adding information with/to uploaded files.
