Subspecies
Synonyms

Well known, common and widely distributed throughout Africa. A common ground nesting and foraging ant which often ascends trees to tend aphids, but does not build tents (Taylor 1977). It was not among the commoner species in the 76-farm survey of Taylor & Adedoyin (1978). Known to be prey of Oecophylla longinoda (Taylor et al., 2018). While this species has been suggested as being invasive in may parts of the world, these reports appear to be largely the result of misidentifications or are presented with little or no justification; additional details are required to confirm its occurrence outside its native range.

Taxonomic Notes

Taylor et al. (2018): Camponotus lohieri Santschi, 1913, new status (here, originally described as Camponotus (Myrmoturba) maculatus Fab. stirps melanocnemis Sants. v. lohieri n. var. Santschi, 1913; raised status to Camponotus maculatus F., var. lohieri Sant., Emery, 1915g: 22), CASENT0905268), Haut-Dahomey, DESANTI.

This treatment of C. lohieri as a valid species by Taylor et al. (2018) was proposed without comment or justification, has has not been accepted by subsequent authors.

Taylor et al. (2018) treat Camponotus proletaria as a full, distinct species but provide no justification for the change. Subsequent authors have not followed this treatment.
